The Government Solution: Privacy Act Signed Into Law

What You Can Do:
Take Steps to Protect Your
Information

1. Stop Trigger Leads

Sign up for OptOutPrescreen or call toll-free at 1-888-5-OPT-OUT (1-888-567-8688). This will stop the four credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian, Innovis and TransUnion from selling your name as a trigger lead. Opting out puts a stop to trigger leads for five years, and the whole process only takes a couple of minutes!

A more permanent solution would be to begin the process online then contact each bureau, and return a signed Permanent Opt-Out Election form, which will be provided after you initiate your online request, though we’d recommend also opting out online to immediately remove your info.

When you call or visit the bureau website, you’ll be asked to provide certain personal information, including your home telephone number, name, Social Security number and date of birth. The information you provide is confidential and will be used only to process your request to opt out.

If you don’t have internet access, you may send a written request to permanently opt out to each of the major consumer reporting companies. Make sure your request includes your home telephone number, name, Social Security number and date of birth.

2. National Do Not Call Registry

Put your name and phone number on the National Do Not Call Registry. You can register any of your phone numbers including your cell phone number. It takes 31 days for this to become effective so the sooner the better. Remember to make a note to re-register every five years because the order does expire.

3. Association of National Advertisers

To prevent third parties from sending you junk mail, you will need to register with the Association of National Advertisers. Whether you register online or through the mail, it will cost you $6.00, which can be charged to your credit card. Register early because the DMA distributes its lists quarterly, so it could take a while to become effective. This registration is good for ten years. These steps may not stop all of the solicitations as your name may have been included in prior lists, but this should help slow it down and eventually end the harassment.

Additional Perk: You may improve your credit score!

Reports indicate that by opting out, you can add 10–15 points to your credit score.
